La base de données du Shom contient des épaves, des obstructions et des roches isolées réparties sur les côtes de France métropolitaine et d'outre-mer. Outre la position géographique, toutes les caractéristiques connues de l'épave ou de l'obstruction sont renseignées : son état, son nom, sa nationalité, la date et les circonstances du naufrage... La base de données des épaves et des obstructions a pour vocation principale de contribuer à la sécurité nautique, mais une épave est un centre d’intérêt à divers égards : richesse de la vie sous-marine, étude des habitats marins, archéologie, histoire des naufrages, danger de croche pour le chalutage ou le dragage...

The Shom database contains wrecks, obstructions and isolated rocks spread around the coasts of mainland France and French overseas territories. All known information on the wreck or obstruction is entered, in addition to its geographic position: condition, name, nationality, date and circumstances of the shipwreck, etc. The wreck and obstructions database is mainly intended to improve nautical safety, however wrecks can be of interest for many reasons: a wealth of submarine wildlife, studying marine habitats, archaeology, history of shipwrecks, danger and catching for dredging or trawling, etc.

Suivant l’origine de l’information, la densité des renseignements sur une épave est variable. Une épave détectée à l’occasion d’un levé hydrographique est très bien connue tant en position qu’en brassiage (la sonde portée sur la carte marine au niveau de l’épave). En fonction de la profondeur, une investigation par plongeur peut compléter sa description. Les groupements de plongée et certains clubs apportent un concours précieux tant en localisation qu’en description des épaves. Pour certains naufrages, le Shom ne dispose parfois que de la position approximative de l’accident de mer. Ces objets sont alors portés sur la carte marine avec la mention « PA » : position approchée ou « PD » position douteuse, en fonction de la précision estimée et de l’échelle de la carte marine.

The density of information available for a wreck varies depending on the source of the information. If a wreck is detected during a hydrographic survey, its position and depth will be clear (the survey data shown on the nautical chart at the wreck). Divers may carry out an investigation to complete the description, depending on depth. Diving groups and some clubs provide precious information on wrecks, with both locations and descriptions. Shom can sometimes only provide an approximate position of the accident at sea for some shipwrecks. In this case, these objects are indicated on the nautical chart with the text "PA": approximate position or "PD" for uncertain position, depending on the estimated precision and scale of the nautical chart.
